As micro:bit celebrates its 10th birthday, there’s plenty to celebrate about the coding skills this pocket-sized computer has helped young people develop. But at Jam Coding, we know that learning with technology is about much more than simply learning to code.
Whether children are creating games, building recycled musical instruments, programming robots or experimenting with AI, using a micro:bit gives them opportunities to think differently, solve problems, share ideas and turn their imagination into something real.
Here are 10 things children can learn when they use a micro:bit, without realising just how much they’re learning along the way!
Give children the same micro:bit and they won’t necessarily create the same thing, and that’s exactly the point.
From inventing a game to designing a musical instrument, the micro:bit gives children the freedom to take an idea and make it their own. They’re not just following instructions; they’re making creative decisions about what they want to build and how they want it to work.
Why isn’t it working? What needs to change? What could I try next?
These are questions children naturally encounter when creating with a micro:bit. Finding the answer encourages them to break problems into smaller steps, investigate what has happened and try different solutions.
And when they finally get it working, that moment is even more rewarding because they’ve solved the problem themselves.
There is something powerful about seeing something you’ve created actually work.
A few lines of code can become flashing LEDs, music, movement or an interactive game. Those visible results can help children recognise what they’re capable of and give them the confidence to tackle the next challenge.
