When you hear the word coding, what comes to mind?
For many people, it might be lines of complicated code filling a computer screen. But step into a Jam Coding classroom and you’ll quickly discover that coding can look very different.
It can look like building a world in Minecraft, programming a micro:bit, designing a game, experimenting with AI or working together to solve a challenge.
This National Coding Week, we’re taking a look inside the Jam Coding classroom to explore some of the different ways we bring coding and computing for the children we teach.
For lots of children, Minecraft is something they already know and love, which makes it a brilliant way to introduce them to coding concepts.
Using Minecraft Education, children can explore programming in a familiar virtual environment, giving instructions, solving challenges and seeing the results of their code unfold right in front of them.
But while they’re busy building, exploring and completing challenges, they’re developing skills that reach far beyond Minecraft.
They’re learning to think logically, break larger problems into smaller steps, spot mistakes, test different solutions and keep going when something doesn’t work the first time.
Suddenly, coding doesn’t feel quite so intimidating.
Coding becomes even more exciting when children can see their programs have an effect beyond the computer screen.
That’s where the BBC micro:bit comes in.
These pocket-sized computers allow children to take the code they create and use it to control a physical device. From displaying messages and creating animations to responding to buttons and sensors, there are countless possibilities.
At Jam Coding, we use micro:bit in a variety of creative ways, encouraging children to experiment, problem-solve and discover what their code can make happen.
It helps children make an important connection: code isn’t just something that exists on a screen. It’s what makes much of the technology around us work.
Most children have played a computer game, but what happens when we put them on the other side of the screen?
Game creation is a fantastic way for children to explore coding while giving them the freedom to be creative.
Instead of simply playing someone else’s game, children can make decisions about how their own game will work. They can create characters, establish rules, design challenges, add interactions and test their ideas.
And when something doesn’t behave as expected?
It’s time to debug!
That process of testing, identifying a problem and finding a solution is one of the most valuable parts of learning to code. Children begin to understand that getting something wrong isn’t the end of the task; it’s often just part of getting to the answer.
Sometimes, the best way to understand coding is to watch something move because of a command you’ve created.
Robotics and physical computing give children the opportunity to see programming in action.
They can explore how instructions control physical systems, experiment with different commands and work out how to achieve a particular outcome.
There’s something particularly rewarding about pressing ‘run’ and watching a physical creation respond exactly as you intended… or even figuring out why it didn’t!
These experiences help turn abstract coding concepts into something children can see, touch and understand.
Artificial intelligence is already becoming part of children’s everyday lives, which makes understanding it increasingly important.
At Jam Coding, we want children to do more than simply use AI. We want them to begin understanding what’s happening behind it.
Through age-appropriate activities, children can explore ideas such as data, machine learning and how computers can be trained to recognise patterns.
For example, our AI Just Code Dance workshop gives KS2 children the opportunity to add data to a machine learning model and use technology in a fun, creative way.
Experiences like these can help take AI from something that feels mysterious to something children can question, explore and better understand.
And that matters as the technology continues to develop.
The technology might change from one Jam Coding session to another, but there’s something connecting all of these experiences.
Children are learning how to think.
Coding encourages them to ask questions:
What am I trying to achieve?
What instructions do I need to give?
Why didn’t that work?
What could I change?
Is there another way to solve this problem?
Those questions build problem-solving, logical thinking, resilience and creativity – skills that can be valuable far beyond a computing lesson.
It also encourages children to move from simply using technology to understanding how it works and discovering what they can create with it.
One of the things we love most about computing is just how varied it can be.
One child might love building and programming in Minecraft. Another might be fascinated by making a micro:bit respond to their instructions. Someone else might discover that they love creating games, experimenting with AI or solving a tricky coding challenge.
Giving children opportunities to experience technology in different ways can help them discover what excites them.
And they don’t have to dream of becoming a software developer for those experiences to matter.
Technology will continue to shape the world children grow up in. Giving them the confidence to understand it, question it and create with it is becoming an increasingly important part of their education.
National Coding Week is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate coding, but for us, inspiring children through computing happens all year round.
Across our curriculum, after school clubs, workshops and other activities, we use different technologies and experiences to make computing engaging, accessible and exciting.
Because coding doesn’t have to mean staring at lines of complicated text on a screen.
It can mean building, creating, experimenting, debugging, problem-solving, imagining… and of course having a lot of fun along the way.
And that’s what coding can look like in a Jam Coding classroom.
